Forecast run data time 00UTC 23 January 2017 T+30 verifying at 06UTC 24 January 2017. Users are advised to keep themselves updated about visibility products through the ECMWF Newsletter and web site.įig9.4.1: An example of HRES forecast fog distribution on right hand chart compared with the observed visibility on left hand chart (visibility as in coloured scale). It should be re-iterated that this is a preliminary implementation of a visibility diagnostic. Visibility calculation using a ‘tuned’ CAMS aerosol climatology was introduced in mid 2017 in Cycle 43R3 and may alter or reduce the deficiencies in visibility outlined above. The extinction coefficient of clean air is taken to be equivalent to a visibility of 100km so values can be no greater than this, and in general visibility in clean air seems rather too great. visibility in precipitation falls rather too low.radiation fog tends to be rather too dense, to form too slowly and clear too quickly (by about 1-3hr),.Visibility is still a relatively new product and undergoing continuing assessment. Where fog is forecast due to cloud water drops in the lowest model layer, visibility can fall below 500m. Horizontal resolution is relatively low, and the lowest level in the vertical is 10m so capturing the detailed extent and composition is difficult, especially in rugged areas. The current technique for visibility forecasting has several limitations it uses a fixed particle size for cloud and precipitation particles, and the e ffects caused by local deviations of the aerosol fields from climatological values and the interactions of fog and aerosol particles are not modelled yet. The extinction coefficients are calculated for the contributions from precipitation and cloud water droplets in the lowest layer of the model and also the presence of climatologically and seasonally varying aerosol species. In the model, the contrast between object and foggy background is taken as 2% difference in luminosity (a liminal contrast of 0.02). The visual range is taken to be the distance at which, despite extinction of light by the atmospheric model fog, it would be possible to distinguish between a theoretical object and the model's foggy background. Visibility in the atmospheric model is defined as the near surface horizontal visibility within the lowest 20m layer above the surface and is calculated using an exponential scattering law. Visibility products are currently made available so that they be evaluated and also to allow users to gain experience. It should be used with caution expectations regarding the quality of this product should remain low. The visibility diagnostic is an experimental product introduced in 2016 and the quality of this product is undergoing continued evaluation with the aim of improving the diagnostic and its usefulness. For these reasons a probabilistic approach using the ensemble members is more beneficial. These can be highly variable in space and time and are often tied to orographic features that are not resolved by the atmospheric model. The visibility diagnostic includes information on the reduced visibility in fog, but correctly predicting very low visibility is dependent on predicting the correct dynamic and thermodynamic conditions in the boundary layer. As a weather hazard, fog is extremely important, but a difficult variable to predict. Ratfink comic books on display at the Corvette Museum. In the 1960s, Roth put out three surf rock albums under the name Mr. He helped shape the look of hot rod culture and even the sound. He even went on to create two books on the subject. The art of pinstriping developed rapidly in the 50s and 60s, and Roth was one of the artists at the forefront. To the general public, one of his best-known endeavors creating “monster t-shirts”, although he was also a pinstriping pioneer. Besides his famous Rat Fink character, Roth created countless t-shirts with his iconic monster characters. His famous creation Ratfink is on the right.Įd Roth went far beyond just making wild cars. The entrance of the Ed Roth Exhibit at the National Corvette Museum. Recently, I had the chance to visit an Ed Roth exhibit (now closed) at the National Corvette Museum entitled “Car-toon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art and Influence of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.” Many of his legendary cars were on display, as well as plenty of memorabilia and some of his Equipment. With Ratfink’s trademark bulging eyes, the cartoon rat adorned countless t-shirts, posters, and comic books, often sticking out of a cartoon hotrod, with his hand on the shifter. However, he is probably best known for his creation of Ratfink, a cartoon rat. For decades he built some of the most innovative and unique custom cars the hot rodding world had seen. Few names are as synonymous with hot rodding culture as Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. I guess I have 'discovered' something blatantly obvious - but in the non-brightened version, I think the leaves on the branch above the large bright spot in the bottom right have a reddish tint (reconstruct-lch-dt.jpg), while the naïve version (naive.jpg) looks (to my eyes) a tad more natural, even if I restore the correct camera matrix as input profile of the raw file (reconstruct-lch-with-camera-profile.jpg).Study of the highlight clipping using RawDigger histogram With exposure increased and filmic applied, the differences are perhaps even smaller ( and ). I loaded the raw into darktable, disabled all the non-linear modules (no filmic etc.), replaced the input colour profile with linear Rec2020 to match the other version and adjusted the exposure to match my naive development's result, and tried both clip and reconstruct modes in darktable's highlight reconstruction ( and ).įor the blown part, dt's clipping loses all details reconstruct-lch and my naive method seem to give comparable results. I then loaded this into darktable, and assigned linear Rec2020 as input profile (my tool does not support camera matrices), and exported the result -> The greying is done by simply averaging the RGB components. So, if a single pixel is blown, it will grey out both the RGB pixel located at the same coordinates, plus all 8 neighbours. finally, it greys out the pixels that are affected by any of the blown pixels (raw value > max value, taken from darktable's raw black/white level module).performs a simple demosaic by interpolating values from neighbouring pixels for the missing components (is that bilinear? I don't even know).applies the WB coefficients taken from darktable's WB module.applies the black and white points I took from darktable's raw black/white point module.I exported the raw data using dcraw -4 -W -T into a tiff file, and ran it through a tool I have started to code in order to understand raw development a bit more. I took a raw file that contains a large blown-out area. Sorry about the multiple updates - I'm quite tired and discovered a number of silly mistakes in the comment. I'm adding it here, although it's not about the raw over-exposure indicator, rather about what's clipped and what's not. Looking at the raw sensor data it seems that the green channels always saturate first, then red, and finally blue. Setting the indicators in darktable to 2.0 and reconstruct in Lch showed magenta in the areas where only the green channels were blown and raw overexposed in the areas where red, green, and sometimes blue were blown. I used the black and white levels from the raw file to determine what was clipped. I used dcraw to extract the sensor data, then octave to play with the individual channels. I took an image that showed raw overexposed areas. If you set the clipping threshold to 2.0 in the raw overexposed indicator and highlight reconstruction to 2.0 and reconstruct in Lch, then anything that shows as raw overexposed is blown in 3 (2 greens and something else) or more channels and anything showing in magenta is blown in 1 channel. So while sensor clipped = raw overexposed, raw overexposed != sensor clipped.Ĭan you use the raw overexposed indicator to figure out if the sensor clipped? I believe so. I think I've discovered the problem with the raw overexposure indicator. “Management is doing thing right leadership is doing the right things.” – Peter Druckerģ5. “The key is to set realistic customer expectations, and then not to just meet them, but to exceed them - preferably in unexpected and helpful ways.” – Richard Bransonģ6. “One customer well taken care of could be more valuable than $10,000 worth of advertising.”– Jim Rohnģ4. “Companies designed for success in the 20th century won’t be successful in the 21st”– Kevin Howardģ3. Anthony Marinos, who oversees Grind’s marketing, community management, and member services, shared with us, “When it comes to cultivating our community at Grind, we’re all about the human element. Grind, for example, is a growing network of coworking spaces in New York and Chicago. Each coworking space has its own vibe, and the managers of each space go to great lengths to cultivate a unique experience that meets the needs of their respective members. Connections with others are a big reason why people pay to work in a communal space, as opposed to working from home for free or renting a nondescript office. Thus, paradoxically, some limited form of structure enables an optimal degree of control for independent workers. Coworkers reported that having a community to work in helps them create structures and discipline that motivates them. Too much autonomy can actually cripple productivity because people lack routines. They can even decide to work from home, without repercussion, if they need to meet a repairperson or deal with a family member need.Īnd while coworkers value this autonomy, we also learned that they equally value some form of structure in their professional lives. They can choose whether they want to work in a quiet space so they can focus, or in a more collaborative space with shared tables where interaction is encouraged. People can decide whether to put in a long day when they have a deadline or want to show progress, or can decide to take a long break in the middle of the day to go to the gym. Coworking spaces are normally accessible 24/7. So in many cases, it’s not simply the case that a person is going to work they’re also part of a social movement. These values get reinforced at the annual Global Coworking UnConference. It clearly articulates the values that the coworking movement aspires to, including community, collaboration, learning, and sustainability. Lastly, meaning may also be derived from a more concrete source: The social mission inherent in the Coworking Manifesto, an online document signed by members of more than 1,700 working spaces. Second, meaning may also come from working in a culture where it is the norm to help each other out, and there are many opportunities to do so the variety of workers in the space means that coworkers have unique skill sets that they can provide to other community members. Our respondents were given the opportunity to frequently describe what they do, which can make what they do seem more interesting and distinctive. Working amidst people doing different kinds of work can also make one’s own work identity stronger. Because there is little direct competition or internal politics, they don’t feel they have to put on a work persona to fit in. They’re able to do this in a few ways.įirst, unlike a traditional office, coworking spaces consist of members who work for a range of different companies, ventures, and projects. Aside from the type of work they’re doing – freelancers choosing projects they care about, for example - the people we surveyed reported finding meaning in the fact that they could bring their whole selves to work. People who use coworking spaces see their work as meaningful. A regression analysis following our survey revealed three substantial predictors of thriving: To find out, we interviewed several coworking space founders and community managers, and surveyed several hundred workers from dozens of coworking spaces around the U.S. So we were curious: What makes coworking spaces – defined as membership-based workspaces where diverse groups of freelancers, remote workers, and other independent professionals work together in a shared, communal setting – so effective? And are there lessons for more traditional offices? This is at least a point higher than the average for employees who do their jobs in regular offices, and something so unheard of that we had to look at the data again. As researchers who have, for years, studied how employees thrive, we were surprised to discover that people who belong to them report levels of thriving that approach an average of 6 on a 7-point scale. There seems to be something special about coworking spaces. |
